WHERE FAMILY LAW AND CORPORATE LAW COLLIDE:
COMPLEX ISSUES IN EXECUTIVE COMPENSATION AND SECURITIES LAW MATTERS
Kate Merrill, a recovering corporate lawyer-turned family lawyer, addresses a few of the complexities regarding executive compensation and securities law matters often overlooked in family law cases. Leveraging her 20-years of experience as a corporate and transactional lawyer, Kate offers practical strategies for leveraging publicly available information and overcoming corporate confidentiality restrictions, discusses the need for active post-judgment monitoring, and explains why forensic accountants aren’t the answer.
Kate Merrill brings 20 years of corporate and transactional experience to her practice of family law. Kate spent 10 years leading corporate transactions as Associate General Counsel of Intel Corporation and as Deputy General Counsel of Intel Capital. Prior to going in-house at Intel, Kate served as outside counsel advising companies and investors at Skadden Arps, Kirkland & Ellis and Wilson Sonsini. Kate earned her JD (cum laude) and her MBA in finance from the University of Michigan in 1998 after graduating from Cornell University in 1995.
Kate’s practice includes partnering with family law professionals throughout California to assist them with cases involving complex compensation structures and high value assets including both public and private company securities (including founders’ shares, venture capital and private equity financings), executive compensation, and incentive equity (options, restricted stock), as well as cases affected by corporate transactions (mergers, acquisitions, IPOs).
